- Don’t forget, this is the adventure capital of Africa with high adrenalin white-water rafting, gorge swings, bungee jumps and famous Victoria Falls just down the road!
ABOUT THIS PROJECT
With over 65% of the population of Livingstone falling under the poverty line, there is a genuine need for community up-liftment and support. A large portion of children are lacking access to general education and safe areas to play, with 1 in 5 being orphans. Schools are overcrowed meaning “Hot Seating” resulting in the need to give their seat up for another child for half the day. Therefore less time to learn and progress into higher education, and with next to no time for Sports or any team activities and play.
By creating supportive after school clubs, individual attention can be given in a fun and productive environment. Providing children with opportunities to gain social skills from positive interactions and a great opportunity for you to be a positive influence and encourage genuine and interactive participation. This is a special place to help a child enhance self-esteem, learn new skills with environmental builds and above make a genuine difference.
KEY VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES
Building and Construction Projects
You will be involved in our on-going building projects with the community and local schools. We use a process called Eco-Bricking - a unique, sustainable and FREE way to make bricks to build incredible structures. An Eco-Brick is a PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottle filled with litter. Once filled, these bottle are used as bricks, offering both a free building material and a way to recycle waste and clean up the community. Using Eco-Bricks, volunteers build greenhouses, chicken coops, compost bins, benches and so much more. It’s a great way to leave a lasting legacy in Livingstone!
Sports and Physical Education
Most children have very limited access to any sports at school, therefore missing out on sport’s many benefits, including healthy physical exercise, teamwork and leadership. We need your enthusiasm and passion to help us develop games and coach the kids. From football to rugby and from athletics to basketball, whatever your interest, helping the children get active is exceptionally rewarding.
Many children living in the community are forced to grow up very quickly. They are expected to take on household chores and in many cases, older siblings are obliged to look after the younger children in the household. In order to give these children a place to learn and experience new things, we host fun and educational after-school clubs.
This program gives you the chance to be creative at Art Club, find the story teller in you during Reading Club, put numbers together for Maths Club or just make up some games to play under the local mango trees.
WHAT ELSE WILL I BE INVOLVED IN?
Farming: We work with sustainable farming programs and assist by helping to prepare the land, planting, watering, weeding and harvesting. The work is fun and hard and the results are brilliant!
Maramba Old People's Home: A favourite trip for many of our volunteers, a visit to Maramba to play games and share stories with the elderly is a humbling and heart-warming experience.
