The Inspired 50 are people around the City of London who push their physical and mental boundaries to the limits to raise funds for fantastic causes. They are motivated not by the challenges others set them, but by the challenges they set themselves that take them beyond their limits, to inspire and support others. We brought 40 of the 50 together in one inspirational night of adventure stories that change lives.
Forty members of the Inspired 50 Network – 10 are still to be recruited – gathered at a packed Glaziers Hall on February 16 to share inspiring stories of extreme adventure and fundraising for causes close to their hearts. Dual-lifer Nick Kershaw – adventurer, founder of a new Uganda Marathon, City based EQ Wealth consultant was the amazing host for the night. Nick says, "the potential of this new network is mind-blowing. The launch saw the dream of bringing together 40 of London’s most exciting adventurers and philanthropists into one room to join as one army become reality. I’m actually more scared of what we can achieve than anything else. To be part of the group is to receive a wonderful affirmation that you are on the right path, but that’s the beginning. Now we go forth and make our impact - our legacy. ”
Sky Sports presenter Julia Immonen shared the highs and lows of sailing across the Atlantic, including why she had to go naked, at the London launch of Inspired 50 – a new network of ‘adventure philanthropists’. Julia, an Inspired 50 member, who had never rowed before taking on the Ocean challenge to raise money to free those caught in modern day slavery, revealed the terror of navigating 50ft waves, the torment of chafing that called for the naked rowing, and the triumph of completing the journey. Her tale is captured in her book Row for Freedom. (Image: Julia Immonen)
Here are some of the other amazing Inspired 50ers featured on the night;
Sonal Kadchha - City professional and co-founder or charity Educating the Children in the Maasai Mara.
Steve Partridge - City entrepreneur and ultra marathon desert runner having covered 4,500K in 270 marathons and raised £1m for charity.
Dave Corthwaite - adventurer, writer and filmmaker, who is undertaking Expedition1000, a plan to complete 25 separate journeys of 1000 miles or more, each using a different form of non-motorised
transport. And who plans to plant one million trees through adventure.
The Inspired 50 is sponsored and the brainchild of start-up City company, Inspired Escapes a philanthropic travel company, enabling people to combine their love for travel and their passion for making the world a better place. It is supported by City Philanthropy – A Wealth of Opportunity, a campaign to promote philanthropy in the City, funded by City of London Corporation’s Charity, City Bridge Trust. We heard from Cheryl Chapman, Director of City Philanthropy who has glad fairy god mother in moving this idea from a blog to the newest philanthropy club in the City.
Inspired 50 member Danny Bent, the engine behind Project Awesome, says: "Us adventurers and go getters tend to hold our cards to our chest simply because we've worked so hard to gain the hand we have. And we achieve pretty great things with what we've got. BUT what we then miss is what we could achieve if we harnessed all this energy and rather than fighting as a single warrior we formed an army that has each others backs and whose skills compliment each other. “
Jennifer Viloria, CEO of Inspired Escapes, spoke at the event: “The potential for this group to come together as a collective and change the face of philanthropy in the City is so exciting. It’s just the beginning and this hunt for the final 10 opens up the network so the entire City can nominate the people that inspire them”
The network currently stands at 40 members. The search is now on to find the remaining 10 of London’s super heroes. Applications are invited from across the City to join the Inspired50 - London’s newest network of fearless, adventurers spreading positivity around the world.
